Pretty much correct though. Not saying that because I think older Quakes are the best thing ever, but because id still hasn’t made a good game since Quake 3. I don’t see how this game would manage to offer anything Overwatch doesn’t have apart from an extremely hardcore ruleset which will just put people off of the game. I’m not expecting anything to come of this, Overwatch will take some beating now.
I don’t agree nor disagree tbh, all we’ve seen is a trailer. I loved quake as well but the people commenting on it have nearly no idea on how impactive the class system is, the devs have said it’s incredibly minor so we have to wait and see some gameplay really.
Overwatch actually has shown that you don’t need to compete with other big fps games, just be different enough to sit in your own space. TF2 held that space for an extremely long time as it decayed and Overwatch just took over as they flat out decided they didn’t want to compete with CSGO.
I don’t think id have that creativity in their ranks at the moment though. It sounds like they’re closing in on better dev quality with DOOM’s single player but they’ve shown they still can’t put out a fully fledged titan of a game.
Yeah this bit is a huge factor for me. The easiest way to explain this would be to look at current WoW compared to Vanilla WoW. The current WoW team seem to be just jumping on whatever is popular at the minute to try and keep the game alive (Current id) compared to trying to revolutionize the genre and bring something new and fresh to the table (early id). The reason these two ideals are completely different is that the team is no longer the same, just like it isn’t with id. The people who made the old games become the masterpieces they were have all gone on to new teams or are now attempting to fly into space.
I have little faith in id not because I’m choosing to be a pessimist, but because it’s now id only in name, not by the people who make up the team.
Just seen the trailer for the new Quake, had a quick read as well. Unsure what to make of it as of yet, I’m pretty much with you here @DayC and @Noodle - recent events (I say recent, since Q4 to present day) don’t fill me with confidence, I was very shocked to find DOOM had such an amazing Single player however, and for that it fills me with some hope as the gun play is said to be amazing. The class based system doesn’t really shock me at all, they’ve implemented similar into QL and as it’s also within DOOM’s MP you could almost predict it would be within a future Quake title, if one was being developed. For me it’s kind of similar to how I felt when 343i took over Halo, there’s potential here - let’s just hope they don’t fuck it up.
