Upgrade [~£500]

(Gavin Rainey) #1

Hi All,

I am going to upgrade my rig on the 26th.

I want a case with a handle for LAN.

I need:
CPU, CPU cooler, Mobo, Case only. I have DDR3, 2 SSD’s, R9 280X and a modular PSU already.

£500 budget. The less the better, more beers for you :D:D

Pint at LAN for you, catch me when Im drunk and I will likely get you drunk

Have you got any z87/97 boards?

(Gavin Rainey) #3

I could get them, what do you recommend if I can/do have one?

(C**t ) #4

if you have one already or could get one dirt cheap, id go haswell over skylake right now to be honest.

Also do you have to have a case with a handle or would something low profile like this ( https://www.overclockers.co.uk/fractal-design-node-202-mini-itx-htpc-case-integra-450w-sfx-psu-black-ca-062-fd.html ) do? That you can shove in a bag.

I’m building something similar for LAN mate and you’ll be pushed to do better than that. DDR4 is affordable now though, Corsair doing 2x4Gb for around £45.

To my knowledge Skylake has near no advantage over Haswell for gaming, on my phone atm but i found a pretty good comparison video the other week, on a pure CPU level at least. Obv motherboard wise it’s better going Skylake due to faster bus speed and DDR4 compatiblilty but unsure on how your budget would fair with it as i haven’t checked pricing in a while.

I managed to get it down to this.

whoever is building

Having personally used that case at like 3 LANs now, if you aim to use the handle on it to carry it, the build quality on the handles are worse than poor, really cheap flimsy plastic.

Everything else looks good.

I think I like this

Don’t forget with Skylake you’re somewhat building into a future Kaby Lake build if you’re planning on reinvesting early.

(Gavin Rainey) #12

I do not until I really need to again

(DayC) #13

Go Haswell then, you’ll see nearly no benefit from Skylake I suspect.

updated my WL, got it to £400, not sure on the skylake mini itx boards atm.

Just purchased this case , 100% agree . Shocking isnt word ,even though its never going to move.

(DayC) #16

Thanks for the info on this was going to buy one for the same job.

I have a bitfenix Pandora, and it fits nicely into a large Disney Store bag. So dead easy to carry to LAN.

Gav rebuilt my machine a few weeks ago after upgrading to one of these. Probably the most homosexual case I’ve had. Was worth trading all my Billy Herrington dolls for it
